Frequently Asked Questions for Women

Am I eligible to join?

If you participated in the original SWIFT study, you are eligible to join the study. You do not have to be a member of Kaiser Permanente healthcare plan to join the SWIFT Follow Up in Women. Please feel free to contact us, and we can tell you more about how to get started.

How will the study benefit me or others?

You will gain important knowledge about your health and well-being by receiving the results of the study exam. The American Diabetes Association Medical Guidelines recommends that women with a history of gestational diabetes be retested at least every three years for glucose tolerance.  This study will test Fasting glucose, Hemoglobin A1C, and/or 2-hour glucose levels.

You would also be helping women like yourself who had or have gestational diabetes to possibly lessen their risk of diabetes.

Are there any fees for this study?

There are no charges for the laboratory tests. You will receive reimbursement for your time and effort. Our study provides free parking for study participants.

I am no longer a Kaiser health plan member.  Can I still participate?

Yes, all women from the original SWIFT Study may participate. You do not have to be a current Kaiser Permanente health plan member to participate.

What if I decide to take part, and then change my mind?

Being in the study is voluntary, and you can stop participating at any time without it affecting your regular medical care at Kaiser or any other health system.

Is my information confidential?

As required by law, we keep all SWIFT Women and SWIFT-Y participant information confidential. Public laws prohibit us from giving out any information that identifies you or your child without your consent. We also keep all survey data safe and secure. To protect your privacy, researchers remove any personal identifiers from the data for analysis.

Details about COVID Safety Information?

COVID times pose barriers to research clinic visits. And that is why we are starting the study by having you complete the online surveys.  Be assured that you and your child’s safety and well-being are our highest priority. We will follow only the strictest safety measures in place by Kaiser Permanente before permitting you and our research staff to be at the medical offices for the one-time visit in the morning.

How long does the research appointment last?

The visit lasts about 2 and a half hours in the morning. We offer weekend appointments for your convenience and several medical centers for the visits so that they are nearby your home.

Where are the study visit locations?

Study visit locations are in the greater bay area for the convenience of participants, including the East Bay, Sacramento area, and the South Bay. You and your child may schedule your visits on the same day.

How can I reach the study team?
